Training comes from agreement between TSTC and TEEX

Starting in Fall 2017, Texas State Technical College’s Continuing Education department will be the only facility in South Texas to offer Occupational Safety and Health Administration safety certification trainings year-round through Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service. The agreement in place between TSTC and TEEX will offer companies and its employers the opportunity for localized OSHA training. The training will range from eight hours to one week depending on the certification.

More than 400 people took advantage of the Infrastructure and Safety Summit recently hosted at Texas State Technical College. Participants hailed from TSTC, municipalities and construction companies from across South and East Texas. The week-long summit offered 24 courses. Courses ranged from basic code enforcement and health hazard awareness to confined space entry and excavation. Trenching and soil mechanics were also covered. The summit comes to the Valley every two years. This is the first time TSTC had been asked to host.

Myra Deleon, TSTC Continuing Education project manager, says that the instructors for the upcoming training, many of whom are TSTC employees, completed their required training by earning certifications and co-teaching hours during the summit.

“The vision of becoming an OSHA training facility has been in works for a while. And hosting this summit has opened that door,” says Deleon. “Not only is this a great opportunity for employers but it’s also a great way to increase awareness on TSTC and our programs.”
